The Framework

The problems are predictable.
So are the solutions.

Every section below shows a real operational failure on the left — and the corresponding framework page that fixes it on the right.

01
Daily Operations

Most facilities track feeding schedules in someone's head.

Walk into any boarding facility during a busy weekend and you'll find the same thing: a senior staff member who's the only person who knows which dog gets half a cup at 5pm, which one can't eat near the black lab, and which boarder is on a prescription diet. When that person calls in sick, the whole system wobbles.

This isn't a staffing problem. It's a documentation problem dressed up as a staffing problem.

Section 2.3 — Daily Feeding Protocol

Daily Feeding Log
Dog ID + Run number verified
Diet card pulled from file
Portion measured (not estimated)
Medications administered + initialed
Eating behavior noted
Uneaten food documented
Feeding time logged (not estimated)

This is an excerpt. The full framework includes 47 pages of protocols.

02
Intake & Intake

Your intake form asks for name and vaccine records. That's not enough.

Every dog that walks through your door carries behavioral history, medical context, and environmental preferences that your staff needs to know — not discover. The industry-standard intake form collects liability basics. The operations framework collects operational reality.

Facilities that complete a 12-point behavioral intake before the first stay report 60% fewer incident reports in the first 30 days.

Section 1.1 — Intake Assessment Protocol
Page 6
kennel-framework-v2.pdf
Intake Flow
Owner arrival + ID check
Behavioral history (12 questions)
Physical assessment by staff
Kennel card created + laminated
Run assignment + orientation

This is an excerpt. The full framework includes 47 pages of protocols.

03
End-of-Day

Evening headcounts are done by memory, not method.

At closing, someone walks the runs and counts. If the number matches, they lock up. What they're not checking: which dogs were moved during the day, whether the isolation kennel was logged, whether the dog in Run 7 has a pickup scheduled for 7am tomorrow. The headcount is a ritual. The framework is a system.

A missed evening log is the single most common precursor to a lost-animal incident.

Who It's For

Recognize yourself here.

The framework was built from consulting engagements across all three of these operator types.

Boarding Facility

The owner who is the system.

You've been running your facility for seven years. You know every dog's quirks, every staff member's blind spots, and exactly how the day should run. The problem: none of it is written down. When you take a day off, the facility holds its breath.

What you're living with

Staff asks you the same questions every shift
Incident reports are handwritten and inconsistent
Onboarding a new hire takes weeks of shadowing
You can't scale because you can't delegate

The framework externalizes your expertise into documented protocols that run without you.

Vet Clinic Expansion

The clinic expanding into boarding without a playbook.

Your veterinary practice is successful. Adding boarding feels like a natural next step. But boarding operations are a different discipline — the intake questions, the daily rhythms, the staff culture, the liability exposure. You need a framework, not a learning curve.

What you're living with

No boarding-specific intake protocols
Medical staff uncomfortable with behavioral management
Unclear separation between clinical and kennel operations
No release protocols that account for liability

The framework gives you a boarding operation that complements clinical care without creating operational chaos.

Multi-Location Franchise

Three locations. Three cultures. Zero consistency.

Location one runs tight. Location two improvises. Location three has its own way of doing everything. A guest who boards at all three gets three different experiences. Standardizing care across locations requires documented systems — not meetings, not memos, not hoping.

What you're living with

Inconsistent intake forms across locations
Staff trained differently at each site
No shared language for incidents or escalations
Impossible to compare performance across locations

The framework creates a shared operational language that works across every location, regardless of local culture.

Systemic Risks

Daily friction becomes systemic risk.
The stakes escalate quietly.

Operational Risk

Staff turnover destroys institutional knowledge.

The average pet care facility loses 40–60% of its frontline staff annually. Every departure takes undocumented knowledge with it — which dogs are difficult, how the afternoon routine actually works, where the emergency vet number is taped inside the cabinet. When knowledge lives in people instead of systems, turnover is catastrophic.

Section 6 — Knowledge Transfer & Staff Transition Protocols

60%

of facilities have no documented staff handoff protocol

Liability Risk

Release protocols without documentation are a liability gap.

A dog leaves your facility. Three hours later, the owner calls — they never picked up. Without a documented, signed release protocol, you have no proof of who authorized the pickup, when it happened, or what condition the dog was in. In the absence of documentation, the liability defaults to you.

Section 5.2 — Release Authorization & Documentation Protocol

1 in 8

boarding facilities has faced a claim related to unauthorized release

Scaling Risk

You can't franchise what you can't document.

Franchise operators discover this too late: the brand is consistent, the operations are not. Grooming studios that perform differently, boarding facilities that interpret the same policy in three different ways, staff who've been trained by whoever was available that week. Scaling without systems doesn't multiply your model — it multiplies your inconsistencies.
